Pinning or pining?

I broke down and joined Pinterest. I'm trepidatious because I can see how it could feed into envy rather than inspiration. I believe strongly in being content with what you have rather than frustrating your life with wanting things beyond your means or values. BUT, it seems like it might be useful for wedding planning - so here I go!

Speaking of, if you are on there, feel free to give me some input on some wedding dress ideas. I'm feeling very uninspired right now (and it's not like I have to decide any time soon, either).

I like Pinterest because it helps my frazzled mind decide to see all my options next to each other, and I actually find that the huge glut of stuff on there actually makes me want less. I have no idea why!

My favorites of the dresses are the ones where the top half of the bodice is sheer, it's so pretty. I "liked" all my favorites!

Good point! This board has been useful for combining lists from both Modcloth and Etsy.

And thanks for the input! I agree about the bodices - I want something pretty but classy and that is a way to balance that out.

I use it in a similar way, too. Like a visual bookmark--now most things I've starred in google reader get pinned in pinterest (and then unstarred in google reader). It's so much easier for me to find blog posts or ideas with a visual cue than something texty.

I haven't decided, although if it's white, I want a color accent, like a belt or shawl (depending on the season). I have one long dress on there, but in general I am tended toward knee or tea length.

Me too! I feel like it would be appropriate for the level of (in)formality we plan the wedding on being while also being something special and pretty.

i do like the long one, but mostly because i think you'd be a knock-out in it.

im kinda biased towards the dresses with the lace since that was the inspiration for my own dress

and concerning pinterest in general, i also find that it makes me want less. sometimes im appalled by what i see on there. i like having recipes and school stuff and other inspirational ideas in one place where they are easy to see.

That is good to hear that it can also squelch those problems of envy and jealousy.

I wanted to have at least one long one as an option, my only concern is it seems much more "wedding-y" than the others.

I like that one too! (And I deleted my Pinterest account because it wasn't adding anything (except a little bit of stress because I felt like I should be making boards of all sorts of recipes, workout ideas, etc.) to my life.)

That's what I'm afraid of! So far, just the one board though. Do you prefer the white or the grapefruit color?

I prefer the grapefruit color - I think it will look better on you, and since you're not having bridesmaids I think that makes it a lot easier for you to wear whatever color you want (no worries about matching/coordinating colors with anyone else).

I "liked" my faves too. I wanted a short dress too (not tea length - that makes my legs look too stubby) and ended up buying an ivory colored bridesmaid dress. The nice thing about that was I could try it on. I was too nervous to buy a custom dress on Etsy that I couldn't return!

I searched Ebay, Etsy and other places like mad trying to find this vintage dress for my wedding, to no avail. Okay, not helpful to share non-purchasable dresses but it reminded me of your pins:

I've looked at some Bridesmaid's dresses, but they still scream "WEDDING!" to me. Maybe it's the fabrics and trends right now.

Thanks for the link! I found the "real weddings" on Etsy really heartening to my cantankerous Anti Wedding Industrial Complex heart. As long as I treat this like a party that we get married at, I think I can get excited about the planning.

i really like the thought of a full-skirted tea-length dress on you. white or color, i think it would be really flattering style. i liked my favorites that you've pinned so far.

personally, i have a tough time caring/keeping up with pinterest. i have used it pretty much only for clothing-related stuff, so if i'm not in a shopping phase, then i can't really be arsed to pay much attention to it. this may be the first time i've visited in 3-4 months.

Thanks so much for the input! Sometimes we have a weird dysmorphia about what looks good on our bodies, so it's really helpful to hear other opinions about style.
