MMRF Ann Landers Race for Research
Aug. 18th, 2008 09:46 am
This summer I did the Couch25K running program in order to train for the Multiple Myeloma Race for Research in Chicago this September. I am on the final week of the program and have almost run a complete 5K!
I'm running for my brother Wayne, who passed away on November 26, 2007 from Multiple Myeloma. Multiple Myeloma is an incurable blood cancer (it attacks the very cells you need to fight cancer). The MMRF doesn't focus as much on "curing" Multiple Myeloma as it does on making the last years of patients' lives comfortable. Wayne really benefited from the Foundation, receiving a stem cell transplant and other experimental therapies. Just a month before he passed away he was running daily and traveling frequently. His quality of life was as good as it could be.
I have a donations page and am still far away from my goal! Please consider helping out - the race is just few weeks away!
(And, in case you are worried, the MMRF is rated 4-stars by Charity Navigator for its fiscal responsibility and allocates 95 percent of money raised to fund myeloma research and related programming, keeping overhead to 5 percent.
