I'm still working on seeing films and there are some I won't be able to see until after the awards because I missed them in the theatre (Capote, History of Violence, The Constant Gardener, etc.) But my one big comment? Crash sucked. Really - even though it's nominated a lot, please, don't waste your time.

no big surprises in the nominations, as far as i can see. well, i'm a bit surprised that good night was nominated for picture over walk the line.

Honestly, even though I didn't care for it, I'm surprised King Kong wasn't nominated in a few places more because, technically, it's a film about actors and the Academy loves films about actors.

then again, good night is about the media, capote is about a writer who worked in hollywood, and crash also pays lip service to hollywood. perhaps they had their bases covered.

in any case, between the top nominated films, brokeback seems to be a lock. the only place that crash has won big was the SAG awards, and the only actor nominated is dillon.

matt dillon, nominated for an oscar. i thought polanski and eminem in the same year was a sure sign of the apocalypse, but now i've got to reassess.

I was surprised by Terrence Howard's nomination, and I've heard Crash is totally heavy handed, but everything else seemed right in line.

if i had to guess, i'd say that howard's nomination was one of those things that could practically be split between two films - as much as i hated crash, he was very good, and between that and hustle & flow, it was kind of the "year of terrence howard" in some people's eyes.

in other words, hollywood didn't have a spectacular year of good roles for actors of color.

Oh yes, the Academy loves the "well, you were great in a whole bunch of movies this year, so here's a nomination" nomination. John C. Reilly got that type of nomination a few years ago, I forget who it was last year - probably Judy Dench or someone like that.

And is it just me, or is best lead actress always the most boring category?

I'm surprised that the movie about the abandoned Japanese children wasn't nominated.

that was an amazing film. who knows why? i'm not very familiar with the other foreign films, but i'm a little surprised that cache didn't get a nomination. then again, it probably freaked the academy the fuck out.

Yay Amy Adams! I loved that movie! Boo for the lack of nominations for The Constant Gardner!

Urgh, Crash. I saw it and was so disappointed. It had all the subtlety of a brick.

" What's that Mr Director, Racism is bad and prevalent in all levels of society. Noooo, this is a totally new and shocking concept to me"

That's exactly what I've heard about Crash. It's good if you think "Race in America 101" is shocking. Well, maybe some people need the subtlety of a brick. I'll see it one day when it comes on TBS or something.

Not only was the screenplay heavy handed, but the fucking music was too. It was like Road to Perdition, whenever there is a long halway something bad is going to happen, I get it!!

hah! perdition was on teevee last weekend, and i watched about an hour of it. man, i'd forgotten how freaking boring that movie is. it's all portent, and no payoff, like mendes thought he was making the godfather, but forgot that there was more to it than set design and lighting.

i actually came over here to mention that constant gardener is on DVD now, so you might be able to fight someone at the library over a copy sometime in the next 6 weeks.

All I can add is that I'm glad that Zhang Ziyi wasn't nominated for Best Actress and that Memoirs of a Geisha didn't get a lot of nominations.

I personally liked "Crash". I know that a lot of people don't like it, but I know lots of people who do, and I am one of them.

I haven't seen any of the Best Picture films. I must be living in a cave. This really hasn't been a good year for movies. There were a few notable indie exceptions that I really liked, like Tumbsucker and Broken Flowers, but all in all a disappointing year.

Is Brokeback Mountain really worth all the hype? I did think it was particularly brave for those actors to portray gay men.

I've been convinced by Ebert that there really were good films out this year, but no one paid attention.

Out of the best picture noms, I've only seen Munich (very good) and Crash (Horrible), but plan on seeing more.

You wanna go see Brokeback with me!?

I'd love to! What's your Friday eveing like? I try to make a point of seeing all the nominations. I wanted to see Capote but was broke for all of December/January. Though I am getting a bit fed up with our fetish for biopics lately.

Next Thursday might be really good - Hubby has a soccer game and he claims he "doesn't like westerns" even though he watched High Plains Drifter on Sunday ;)

Oh, and did you check your mail?

Not yet! I will right now! Next Thursday as in this coming Thursday? Or the one next week? :)

I've been living under a rock. I didn't see any of the movies up for best picture, although I think that I might see Brokeback Mountain later this week. (It surprises me that it even came to my town since there are so many homophobic rednecks here.)

I did see Memoirs of a Geisha twice. While a very pretty movie, it wasn't anywhere near as good as the book. I think it relied a little bit too heavily on the visual aspect and not on the actual substance of the movie.

So Crash wasn't good? I kept hearing rave reviews about it.
