I think the writer missed this idea that we have so much faith in science and medicine. There is such strong belief that everything can be fixed, or at least named; that the body is understood. There is also something empowering and comforting about having a diagnosis-- you know what to type into your search engine, you can find a support group, you can tell people what you have. With no diagnosis, you are left adrift.
