Well, IMO it's because hunting seems connected to gun culture. You hear people talking about having all these high powered rifles and taking down deer from far far away. Really that's just target practice with a live animal. Maybe it makes you a good shot, but not really a good hunter. It would be much more like actual hunting if you were out there with, say, just a knife.
