This makes me really, really angry. The abuse of inmates in prisons (and of ohter insitutionalized people) has been rampantly identified ... ugh. There's a good essay called "Breaking In: Compromises in Participatory Field Research within Closed Institutions" by Mary Stratton that I found very good. It's in the book Walking the Tightrope, edited by Will van de Hoonaard, a great collection of essays on research ethics.
