Though I'm not so sure about that specific study, the whole idea of players perceiving things differently at certain times seems obviously plausible. Granted this is what I would say after taking many classes on perception and having a degree in cognitive science. I think the natural inclination for people is to think that perception is consistent and you always perceive what is actually there (other than hallucinations and illusions). Actually perception is quite variable and merely a selective interpretation of what is going on. So the idea that things can "seem to slow down" or that the ball can "seem bigger" probably wouldn't seem far fetched to a researcher in cog psych. The really interesting research is in figuring out the neural mechanisms behind this change in perception.
