My advisor from UMass is a finalist for the National Book Award! The year after I left UMass he won a Guggenheim and several other prestigious awards so that he could take several years off and write it. During that time he left UMass for Ohio State University (and took Jane with him, by the way,
johnnytwocents and
zorn_von_bulach).
His book is about the legal case that started the NAACP legal defense fund. I did my primary field with him, social politics in the twentieth century America, and he let me weasel in a lot public health stuff. He finally saw the light in my endeavors when he found out that the principle characters in his book were imprisoned and the wife died of the tuberculosis that she contracted in prison.
This is going to put a smile on my face all week :)
(and many thanks to
elynor for posting about it!)
