The audience for this talk was mostly doctors and they kept pushing back with "well, what could doctors do back then anyway!" which I wish he had challenged them more on - in 100 years I'm sure there are many aspects of our medicine people will find barbaric and ineffective and these comments just prove the speakers point - doctors think they have it figured out. He did end with a discussion of sports medicine - we think that it's ok that sports played predominantly by minorities (football, boxing) for the entertainment of white people are safe because there is a doctor present - when, in fact, logitutinal studies show that most athletes experience daily pain and long term effects of that sport. A more prescient example of race and medicine and one that the audience largely ignored.
