There is actually a scale: flat ground is 1, a slope is 2, a steep slope is 3, something so steep that it would be made easier with ropes or parts of it require ropes is class 4 (definitely a lot of that on this hike).
5 and up is rope assisted rock climbing (like I do in the gym or what I did at Joshua Tree). That rating system goes 5.1-, 5.1, 5.1+, 5.2-, 5.2, 5.2+ (and so on) until 5.10 and then you get 5.10a, 5.10b, 5.10c, and 5.10d until 5.15a (of which there are very few in the world and would be akin to climbing a plate glass window).
