Aztalan

Aztalan was a Mississippi Mound settlement (the farthest north they have been documented) that flourished from 900-1200 AD in South Central Wisconsin.



It is close to the Crawfish River, where this lovely tree provided a romantic nook to spend some time on my birthday



There were lots of beautiful wildflowers that reminded me of back home



And a lot of reconstructed stockade walls

It's interesting to me how similar in shape that mound is to things I saw in Mexico, even though it's a completely different culture. Like the tiered steps and such.

Yeah, I can see why there would be similarities just functionality-wise (not that we truly know the function) because they build them in two phases - one tier to create height and the second for the specific purpose (burial, storage, elite housing). Us humans, we've got a thing for heights.
