I think also that the language is sometimes so subtle, ingrained and persausive that sometimes you almost let it slip by. It doesn't have to be hostile, it can be patronising, it can be reducing a gender to a set of characteristics. Some people would claim not to be sexist just because they weren't being aggressive.
