Oh, I don't think that Disney is a pillar of environmentalism in a positive way, but in a representative way - if you look at the ideals of modern environmentalism you can see how Disney has reflected and reinforced values like anthropomorphizing animals, the wilderness ethic, and the consumption of nature as a product. Japanese animators reflect the environmental values of Japan - which are different than those of America.
