I would think that some form of market trade makes sense in Mayan society, given that the city-states were in a variety of geographic regions. Even in the Yucutan, some were on the coast, others the jungle, others scrubby plains...so it makes sense that each would have their own food resources, and might be inclined to trade amongst themselves.
