It's called Shave Ice

Yesterday Nick and I slept in and wandered down the hill to the Avenues Fest - a local street festival that started as a remodeling tool exchange and now has two music stages and four blocks of local booths and vendors (SO Avenues - people *love* restoring houses around here - we've seen three turnover since we've moved here and they are working on one across the street from us). There were Girl Scouts and the humane society and our local politicians and lots and lots of dogs :)

I have discovered another thing to love about this city - their committment to shave ice. Seriously - there were 5 different shave ice stands at the Fest.

Shave Ice

To give you an idea of how busy it was - this is from the Fest's webpage, not by me.

Oh man, I love shave ice. Some enterprising high schooler here started a food cart business last summer selling shave ice. BEST KID EVER.

'round these parts we call them snowballs. Traditional Baltimore flavors are Egg Custard and Spearmint(with marshmallow topping).

See, you're making SLC look so inviting! I'm curious if they have traditional local flavors?

That link mentions a few local favorites, including topping ice cream and frozen yogurt with shave ice and secret flavors!

Ooh, now I'm dying to know what"Tiger's Blood" tastes like. I wonder if it's like "Skylight" which is really just some kind of blue fruit punch.

I need to try it too! It sounds... tropical?

That's awesome -- I love local food quirks! In Rhode Island my labmate made the mistake of asking for Italian Ice and she was given a lecture about how "frozen lemonade is NOT Italian ice." I think I would twitch a little saying "shave ice" instead of "shaved ice."

Seriously, a street fair that started as a home improvement swap? That sounds awesome!
