Oh god - yes, yes, yes. While I'm all for the role of the internet and digital media to create new places for knowledge and debate, when that is the only place you are doing it, you are limiting your exposure to types of information, argumentation, and style. Like you said, it often fosters a type of cruelty, over-personalization, and superficiality.
